Who shops at Hand-Me-Ups?

Anyone who is looking for great merchandise at bargain prices.  We are open to the public.

What are your hours?

Hand-Me-Ups is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.

When do you accept donations?

Any time we are open.  But, please, do not leave donations outside if we're not here.

Do we just bring donations in the front door?

Come around the back (past the Laundromat) and ring the bell if our back door is not open. Please do not leave donations outside when the store in closed.

Can we get a receipt for our donations?  Are they tax-deductible?

Absolutely. The fair market value is between you and the IRS.

Do you accept building and construction materials?

Habitat Hand-Me-Ups will be opening a construction materials store soon.  We now have a system established to accept donations of building and construction materials to build the inventory for the new store. Since these items are stored in off-site storage, please do NOT drop them off at the Shannon Plaza location. What happens to donated items?  Are they used in Habitat homes?

All donations to the store are available for sale at the store.  No items are passed along to the Habitat homes.

Where do the proceeds from the sales go?

Store profits are used to build habitat homes in Durham and Orange Counties.

Do you pick up donations?

We can schedule pickups for furniture and large appliances.  If we are picking up those items, we will also take household goods.

How long does it take to schedule a pickup of donations?

It depends upon your location and how busy we are.  Generally we can accommodate people within a week.

Are prices negotiable?

No.  We do lower prices on furniture and higher priced items if they have been here more than 6 weeks.

How often do you get new merchandise?

New merchandise is put on the sales floor every day.

What forms of payment do you accept?

You can pay in cash, with a Visa or Mastercard (credit or debit), or by check.

What is the return policy?

No returns, no exchanges.  Once paid for, the item is yours.

How can my business get involved?

Spread the word!  We will gladly give you a brief paragraph (or more) to include in mass emails, listserves, church/civic/neighborhood newsletters.  As a business you could organize a donation drive.

Can youth volunteer?

Certainly!  We welcome youth age 14 and above.  All youth need to meet with a staff member before starting to work.
